Location Scouting in Bali: Lessons From Two Recent Productions

Through two recent productions, our team gained valuable insights into how location shapes not only the visuals of a project, but also the way a production unfolds in real time.

Bali is widely known for its breathtaking landscapes, but over the past few years, it has also become an increasingly dynamic playground for film and commercial production. Beyond beaches and rice terraces, the island offers an impressive range of adaptable locations, from private villas and medical clinics to cafés, hotels, and urban spaces, all of which can transform into cinematic environments with the right approach.

1.

Filming in Unusual and Sensitive Locations

One of the most memorable challenges we encountered was gaining permission to film inside a fully operational hospital and a smaller medical clinic. Unlike typical filming locations, medical facilities come with strict protocols around cleanliness, movement, and patient privacy which meant our usual production workflow had to be carefully adjusted.

What Overcrank Media focuses on to make it work:

    • Clear communication about noise levels, equipment placement, and crew movement
    • A transparent and detailed production plan shared in advance
    • Reassurance that filming would not disrupt patient care or daily operations

Beyond the clinic, we also filmed in cafés, private villas, and even a hotel inside the airport. Each space had its own rhythm, limitations, and sensitivities, requiring thoughtful scheduling and strong coordination with local partners and authorities.

The experience reinforced an important takeaway: sensitive locations are not off-limits. They simply require respect, preparation, and a structured approach.

2.

When Location Shapes the Production Workflow

In the same project, we were also tasked with filming multiple scenes inside a moving car on public roads. What might sound straightforward quickly turned into a complex coordination effort involving:

  • Camera rigging
  • Compact and mobile lighting solutions
  • A skilled driver and support vehicles
  • Police escort
  • Real-time awareness of traffic conditions

Shooting on live roads reminded us that location planning is never just about aesthetics. It is equally about logistics, safety, and decision-making under pressure. In many ways, the location dictated how we worked and that became part of the creative challenge.

3.

Transforming a Villa Into a Fully Functional Set

While one production moved across multiple locations, our other recent project took a completely different approach. We filmed entirely inside a single villa that we rented for a week.

This sound simple and easy right? This actually required a deep level of design and technical planning. To bring the script to life, we:

    • Built temporary walls, replaced window and doors
    • Redesigned the interior layout to fit the story
    • Created custom tools and rigs specifically for the set

The villa had become a fully controlled production environment. A testament to how flexible Bali’s accommodations can be when handled responsibly. Equally important, we ensured the property was returned to its original condition, treating the space with care and professionalism throughout the process.

4.

Why Location Strategy Really Matters

Looking back on both productions, several key principles emerged that may be useful for filmmakers, agencies, and creative partners considering a shoot in Bali or elsewhere in Indonesia:

  • Bali’s locations are highly adaptable. With thoughtful planning, everyday spaces can be transformed into cinematic worlds.
  • Creative solutions thrive in flexible environments. When a location allows modification, production can achieve a level of control similar to a studio shoot.
  • Permissions are achievable with the right mindset. Sensitive spaces require patience, documentation, and clear communication.
  • Local collaboration makes all the difference. Working with a team that understands Bali’s systems, culture, and logistics can save time, stress, and resources.

For storytellers looking to bring ambitious ideas to life, Bali offers a rare combination of visual diversity and practical flexibility. Whether your project demands complex logistics, creative problem-solving, or both, our recent experiences have only strengthened our belief in what’s possible here.
